Dreams In Transit – Premiere
on: Tuesday 6th September
We first saw Dreams In Transit by award winning director , Karen Martinez at its premiere at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival last year . We loved it and have been eagerly awaiting its UK premiere . So happy it’s finally here !
First screened to much acclaim at the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival in September 2015, the film is narrated by a Trinidadian based in London, who returns to the Caribbean to explore what ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ really mean for both migrants and non-migrants, particularly in the age of cheap air travel and Skype. The film uses a kaleidoscopic approach that mixes interviews, actuality, a meditative narration delivered by the actor Martina Laird and an evocative acoustic score by acclaimed London-based Tri…nidadian composer Dominique Le Gendre.
After the screening independent film and moving image curator Karen Alexander will be in discussion with director Karen Martinez.
“The subject of contemporary migrant identity — where do you call ‘home’ and where do you feel you ‘belong’ — is something that as a migrant from Trinidad to the UK I’ve often thought about. For people who travel back and forth between places, how do we define ourselves? If, after spending much of your lifetime living in another country, you still say I’m a Trinidadian or Nigerian, or Canadian, or Pakistani etc. What does that mean?
Dreams in Transit is a personal reflection around this subject using a hybrid, poetic style in order to shed a fresh light on these key questions.”
